Ahab Bowen
Address: 2614 Boll Street, Dallas, TX 75204 Vintage lovers, this store is for you! An Uptown favorite, this second-hand clothing shop gets high marks all around. Dallas 10 Best calls it “a Dallas legend” and Lucky Magazine voted it “Best Vintage in Dallas”. One loyal customer raves: Ahab Bowen is by far the best vintage store in Dallas — if not in the whole state of Texas! The quality of clothes is outstanding. It’s the only place that I’ve been able to find inexpensive, 1960s Dallas-chic. It’s common to find many Jackie O-type, Neiman Marcus tagged treasures. I’ve been shopping there since 1994 when I was in high school. To this day, I still wear many of my Ahab Bowen finds. They have timeless clothes. And the ambiance in the store’s little house makes shopping very delightful! Ahab Bowen is a must for vintage lovers! - Dallas Citysearch User Opinion, 10/27/2005 What more can we say? Chipotle
Address: 2705 McKinney Avenue, Dallas, TX 75204 In the mood for Mexican but pressed for time? Chipotle is the perfect solution. This Mexican fast food chain (which used to be owned by McDonald’s, incidentally) has a convenient location in the heart of Uptown Dallas. No longer associated with McDonald’s, you can now buy Chipotle stock! It’s a pretty chic-looking joint as far as fast food spots go, and the price is definitely right. All of your typical Mexican fare is served up — burritos, fajitas, tacos, etc. — and dishes are made to order with super-fresh ingredients right in front of you. Plus, Chipotle has an added benefit: Mexican beer and margaritas are on the menu! The only bad part is that they think they are too good to serve queso, so you can’t get any there. I recommend visiting the official web site and emailing them to tell them that you want queso, and you want it YESTERDAY. Choose the section called “Speak”. Nasher Sculpture Center
Address: 2001 Flora Street, Dallas, TX 75201 If you visit only one museum in Uptown Dallas, this should be it. Over the course of four decades, Dallas entrepreneur Raymond Nasher and his wife Patsy amassed an extraordinary collection of over 300 sculptures. Truly extraordinary! It is considered one of the finest modern sculpture collections in the world, with works by artists such as Matisse, Miró, Picasso, and Rodin. And the museum facility itself is a work of art. In fact, Mr. Nasher paid for its construction himself! World-renowned architect Renzo Piano designed the contemporary 55,000-square-foot building – which occupies an entire city block – and accompanying outdoor garden which serves as a gallery as well. In her New York Times review, Kathryn Jones recounts her run-in with Mr. Nasher himself, who was present the very day she visited the Sculpture Center: I wanted to tap him on the shoulder and tell him I understood what he meant when he often has said that he and Patsy had bought only works that “gave us butterflies.” After several hours at the Nasher Sculpture Center, I, too, felt the flutterings of excitement. Get the butterflies yourself! Other mentions include: Architecture Week An interesting side note: Raymond Nasher has been sharing his collection with the Dallas public long before opening the Sculpture Center in 2003. The original developer of north Dallas’ chic NorthPark Center shopping mall, Mr. Nasher has rotated his prized pieces by artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Henry Moore in the mall since its doors opened in 1965. Uptown Trails Cemetery Tour
Address: Oak Grove Avenue at McKinney Avenue, Dallas, TX 75204 Explore Dallas’ colorful past! Some pretty fascinating tales are chronicled in the Uptown Trails Cemetery Tour. Historian Ron Emerich has researched and documented the stories of countless early Dallas residents on historical markers throughout four burial grounds in Uptown: Greenwood Cemetery, Temple Emanu-El Cemetery, Calvary Cemetery, and Freedman’s Memorial. During this self-guided walking tour, you’ll learn about the lives of eight former Dallas mayors, Civil War soldiers, and Carrie Marcus Neiman (co-founder of – you guessed it – Neiman-Marcus) who are among those buried. Theatre Three
Address: 2800 Routh Street, Dallas, TX 75201 How about an evening at the theater? This neighborhood playhouse has been entertaining Uptown audiences for over four decades. Theatre Three showcases nationally-known productions such as the hit Broadway musical “The Full Monty” and Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” as well as works from local talents. “My Own Private Diva”, written by and starring Theatre Three’s own Resident Musical Director Terry Dobson, scored rave reviews: “Dobson holds the audience like a skilled magician who has put a spell on everyone with his brilliant writing and acting. His comedic timing, pace, and delivery are matched in perfect sync with his facial expressions…The comedy in the piece is hilarious, hilarious, hilarious! Who knew Dobson was a comedic genius at writing! Throughout the evening the laughter grew so high in volume that I’m sure people 20 blocks down could hear this ear shattering laughter coming from Theatre Three….You would be a fool to miss this.
