Peter Frank of LA Weekly asserts: “Not since the Museum of non-Objective Art in New York morphed into the Guggenheim Museum more than half a century ago has there been anything like this in North America.”

Quite a statement! Frank is referring to the MADI Museum in Uptown Dallas — the first gallery devoted solely to MADI art.

What is MADI art, you may ask? Good question. No one really knows the origin of its name, but, in short, MADI is an avant-garde movement founded by Carmelo Arden Quin in the 1940’s in Argentina. The art form resembles Cubism: lots of bright colors and geometric design. (Just take a look at the museum exterior and you’ll get the picture!)

And, who would have thought that the MADI building also houses a law practice? Indeed, it does. Attorney Bill Masterson, the museum’s founder and MADI enthusiast (clearly!), is also president of Kilgore & Kilgore law firm.

There’s an interesting history behind the Morrill name. Established in London in 1796, W.J. Morrill, Ltd. developed an impressive clientele list over the centuries by providing top-notch restoration services. Well, “impressive clientele” if Queen Elizabeth II and Winston Churchill fall into that category. In 2000, the gallery transitioned its headquarters to Uptown Dallas’ arts and antiques district.

The chic new Goss Gallery, located at Cedar Springs and Fairmount in Uptown, has quite a European flair. And it should, given that proprietor Kenny Goss, a Dallas native, has the influence of his British partner, pop star George Michael. Plus, the gallery’s director and curator are based across the pond, also heading up the well-respected Hamiltons Gallery in London.

The Goss Gallery’s specialty is 20th- and 21st-century painting and photography. Exhibits regularly feature the works of internationally known artists, including David LaChapelle who has photographed the likes of Madonna, Elton John, and Whitney Houston.

But bring your pocketbook! In an interview with Guide Live, Tim Jeffries, one of the gallery’s London-based consultants, explains the niche: “We’re tapping into a new market of buyers willing to spend between $50,000 and $100,000.”

Gerald Peters has been a hot name in the art world for decades. In 1972, Peters opened his first gallery in Santa Fe and has since opened two additional spaces: one in New York and the other in Uptown Dallas.

The Dallas venue was established in 1986 and, in the late-90′s, Edmund P. Pillsbury — former director of Fort Worth’s Kimbell Art Museum — teamed up with Peters. The alliance lasted four years and resulted in, unequivocally, one of Dallas’ finest galleries.

The 10,000-square-foot Uptown location boasts an indoor viewing area, atrium, and sculpture garden. Exhibits feature 19th- and 20th-century European pieces, including works by masters such as Picasso, Matisse, and Segal.
